As a wedding photographer based in Chicago, I know that we have skyline views, lakefront sunsets, historic architecture, and romantic parks.

But sometimes… a couple wants something completely different.

Something immersive.

Something that feels like stepping into another world.

That’s exactly what we found at the Chicago Balloon Museum.

Chicago has no shortage of beautiful engagement photo locations. We have skyline views, lakefront sunsets, historic architecture, and romantic parks.

Something immersive.

Something that feels like stepping into another world.

That’s exactly what we found at the Chicago Balloon Museum.

I recently had the pleasure of photographing a couple session inside the Balloon Museum, and honestly - I LOVE IT!

This isn’t just a museum. It’s an immersive art experience where light, shape, sound, and movement all come together. Every room feels like stepping into a different universe.

The Balloon Museum travels around the world, and right now it’s staying in Chicago until April 2026. After that - it’s gone.

If you’re considering this location for engagement photos, this is your window.

You can purchase tickets directly through their official website (I always recommend booking in advance, especially for weekends).

Once you walk in, you begin exploring room by room: about 20 different immersive stages, each with a completely unique setup.

When I photograph engagement sessions here, I intentionally choose spaces that match the couple’s vibe and energy. We didn't shoot in all 20 rooms; we focus on the ones that feel authentic to the couple.

Here are a few of my favorites for photography:

The Blue Cube Balloon Room

This space features a massive blue geometric balloon structure with diamond shapes. The lighting here creates dramatic shadows and a modern, high-fashion feel.

It’s bold. Clean. Striking.

Perfect for couples who love contemporary art and editorial-style photos.

The Charcoal Balloon Room with Painted Ceilings

This room has darker tones with artwork flowing across the walls and ceiling. It creates depth and a slightly dramatic mood.

I love using this space for creative compositions: wide-angle perspectives and artistic framing.

The Yellow Balloon Pool Room (One of My Favorites)

This room is like a cosmic space.

Bright yellow walls.

A pool filled with small balloons.

Massive immersive screens with moving visuals.

It feels playful and cinematic at the same time.

But here’s something important to know: You won’t have unlimited time here.

After you enter, the immersive video show begins and once it ends (about 10 minutes total), the staff guides everyone to the next room.

We move quickly and intentionally here. I plan shots ahead of time so we maximize those minutes.

The Colorful Balloon Room

This space gives a high-energy, creative atmosphere. The colors pop beautifully on camera and work especially well with outfits that contrast the background.

If you love bold, fun photos this is your room.

The Paint Room

There’s a room where paint is layered beneath transparent plastic surfaces. It creates interesting textures and unique detail opportunities.

This is where I love capturing details, like a hands ring or so.

The Swing Room with Circular Light

One of the final rooms features a swing centered inside a circular light installation.

It feels magical.

Almost cosmic.

This space creates soft, romantic, dream-like images, especially when we slow down and focus on movement and emotion.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

If you’re considering this for your engagement session, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Wear outfits that complement bold colors (solid tones work best).
  • Weekdays are usually less crowded.
  • This location is about creativity not traditional posing.

And remember, The Balloon Museum leaves Chicago in April 2026.

If you’ve been thinking about doing something different, this is your moment.

When we finished the session and walked through the souvenir shop at the end (yes, they have one: cups, t-shirts, fun keepsakes), my couple looked at each other and said:

“This didn’t feel like a photoshoot. It felt like an experience.”

That’s exactly what I want for my couples.

Not just photos. Memories.

FAQ

Can you take professional engagement photos at the Chicago Balloon Museum?

Yes, professional engagement photos are possible at the Chicago Balloon Museum. Since it is a public immersive art experience, sessions are typically done during regular visitor hours with purchased tickets. I always photograph respectfully and efficiently while following venue guidelines. If you're planning a couple photoshoot here, I help you prepare so everything runs smoothly.

How much does it cost to do a couple photoshoot at the Chicago Balloon Museum?

You will need regular admission tickets for each person (including the photographer) $37–$46. Parking is $10~$14 onsite. My engagement session pricing depends on session length and customization, contact me directly for detailed packages tailored to this location.

What should we wear for a Balloon Museum engagement session?

Because the museum features bold colors and immersive lighting, solid outfits work best. Neutral tones (white, beige, black) create a clean, modern look, while bold single-color outfits can make your photos pop against artistic backgrounds. I always guide my couples with personalized outfit recommendations before the session.

When is the best time to take photos at the Chicago Balloon Museum?

Weekdays are usually less crowded and give us more flexibility. Since some rooms allow limited time (like the immersive yellow balloon room), I plan ahead to maximize each space. The museum is also perfect for winter engagement photos in Chicago because it’s fully indoors.

Is the Chicago Balloon Museum a good location for unique engagement photos?

Absolutely. The Chicago Balloon Museum is ideal for couples who want something creative, artistic, and different from traditional skyline or lakefront engagement photos. With over 20 immersive rooms featuring light, shape, and sound installations, it creates a high-tech, cosmic, and playful atmosphere that feels unforgettable. Keep in mind the museum will leave Chicago in April 2026, so this opportunity is limited.
